Child and Family Specialist

CSA, a private non-profit social services agency, has an excellent opportunity for an individual skilled with engaging families in the education of children as well as assisting families to become self-sufficient and stable. The Child and Family Specialist (CFS) helps families secure resources such as training, emergency services, and other assistance. This position also helps address the social and emotional needs of children through curriculum and other direct interactions with the children. Key Responsibilities:

•Works with families to complete assessment of strengths and areas of need

•Completes family goal plans and child goals for home and school with each classroom family

•Provides social service emergency assistance referrals and adult education referrals

•Assists with daily individual and group activities using prepared lesson plans in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards to prepare children for the transition to kindergarten

•Performs mental health/disabilities observations based on the needs of the family/and or classroom for specific children

•Develops and implements classroom activities in partnership with teaching staff to be incorporated in classroom lesson plan for the social emotional development

•Attends and participates in all IEP meetings for children in the assigned classrooms

•Attends monthly team meetings with the Family, Health and Disabilities Manager and the Special Education teachers from Washoe County School District

•Assists in the development and implementation of specific behavioral interventions that address the needs of all Head Start children

•Assists in ensuring that parents obtain medical and dental information for their children

Ability to:

•Work effectively as part of a team in support of the Head Start philosophy of shared authority and decision-making under certain conditions

•Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, government guidelines, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

•Respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, committees, or parents

•Speak effectively before groups of children, clients, and assorted employees, including members of the management team

•Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists

•Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form

•Travel occasionally as the job requires (one position requires travel to our site in Carson City once per week)

Knowledge of:

•Issues of childhood development services planning and reporting

•Contemporary issues and methods in child development

•Issues concerning crisis management and risk assessment

•Federal and State guidelines for interacting with children with varying needs (e.g. I.D.E.A.)

•Issues concerning community-based planning

•Head Start Performance Standards and philosophy (may be learned on the job)

•Issues of program area planning, operations, and evaluation

•Information system applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel

Education and/or Experience:

•Required:

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or University with a major in Early Childhood Education, Psychology, Social Work, Human Services, or a degree that includes six Early Childhood Education classes and one year of related experience in a pre-school environment.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

•Sheriff's Card, TB Test Results, CPR & First Aid, Infectious Disease, Valid Driver's License, and DMV printout
